This year has marked a turning point for Nowata’s cheer program. According to head coach Janet Washam, determination and a renewed competitive spirit have defined the season. For the first time in years, the squad has taken on a rigorous competition schedule, stepping onto the mat six times across two semesters. With three competitions already behind them and three more ahead, the program has reached a level of involvement and ambition unmatched in recent memory.
“This year we also have our largest squad ever,” shared Washam, who said the growth in numbers has allowed the program to establish both a competitive varsity team and a junior varsity team.
The expansion has given more athletes the opportunity to participate and strengthen the program as a whole. Rebuilding the competitive program, Washam said, has been one of the top achievements this year.
“Transitioning from a strictly sideline squad to one that practices over the summer and competes in front of judges is no small accomplishment, but our athletes have risen to the occasion,” Washam added.
The team has also successfully added more difficult stunts, demonstrating technical growth while elevating their performance. Their hard work has been recognized and praised by judges and the community, helping to build a reputation and foundation the program can continue to grow on.
“When your community notices your growth, you’re doing something right,” Washam shared.
Washam shared that the squad has seen tremendous growth among athletes, in both expected and surprising ways. Irie Wishall, described as “the hardest-working person,” consistently gave her all during practice and competitions. Meanwhile, Klaire Bunker experienced one of the team’s most dramatic transformations, evolving from a shy athlete into one of the team’s most energetic and inspiring leaders.
The freshman class has been another bright spot, giving the program confidence in the years ahead. Trusted with high-pressure, high-difficulty responsibilities, the youngest members of the team are described as one of the most talented groups the program has seen.
“The future is strong with that class,” Washam said.
As the team prepares for future competitions, the focus shifts toward building strength, refining motions, and advancing stunt difficulty. Washam plans to introduce a more advanced formation every two weeks, an intentional move to keep difficult skills in rotation and prevent athletes from losing momentum once fall cheer ends.
Washam looks to leverage the team’s strengths, using the progress they’ve made this season as a springboard for greater improvement.
“One of their strengths is their desire to improve and be successful,” Washam said.
While they continue to build on this season’s successes, Washam is confident the team will rise to new challenges.
“They are building so much more within themselves and for the future of the program than they realize.”
As Nowata cheer continues to set new standards, the program is stepping into a bold new era. With a vision of excellence, the squad is building a legacy for tomorrow, shaped by the talent of the athletes leading the way.
