OUTLOOK

While the Barnsdall girls’ basketball program is still developing in head coach Gary Askew’s system, they do have an advantage this season returning several upperclassmen who bring talent and experience to the court.

“I have four returning seniors led by the combination of Nellie Holcomb and Lyndsi Hicks and supported by Riley Roach and Hailey Gardner. I have high expectations for our season. If I can rapidly build our younger girls to play a high level, we should be successful,” coach Askew said.

Nellie Holcomb (5-3, Sr.) averaged 12 points, 3.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per contest last season. Holcomb plays with an aggressive style on both ends of the court.

“Nellie’s skill causes defenses to double team her opening the floor for teammates. She was all VYPE Top 100 last year, first team All-Conference, multiple All-Tournament team selection,” said coach Askew.

The second part of the dynamic duo is Lyndsi Hicks (5-6, Sr.). Hicks had a great junior year averaging 10 points and 4.0 steals a game. A left-handed shooter, Hicks can score from anywhere on the floor. The pair will create all sorts of problems for opposing teams.

Not to be ignored on the floor, Rylee Roach (5-10, Sr.) is a forward who can average nearly a double-double per game. Roach averaged 7.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Roach brings another element to both ends of the court. Her ability to battle for rebounds is crucial for the team’s success. Coach Askew calls Roach, “an assistant coach on the floor.”

A pair of guards will play a crucial role in bringing it all together. Hailey Gardner (5-4, Sr.) and Hanna Lay (5-4, Jr.) bring intensity and passion to the court for Barnsdall. Their play will help this team meet those high expectations coach Askew has for this group this season.
