Barnsdall High School senior Braxten Willis understands that an offensive lineman’s job demands more than strength. It requires focus, communication and a willingness to put the team ahead of individual recognition.
Willis has competed in football for four years and plays along the offensive line for the Panthers. He said the speed of the game makes mastering the position a constant challenge.
“The hardest part about playing this position is remembering all of the blocking assignments, because you have to stay focused and make the right decisions while everything is happening so fast,” Willis said.
Pass blocking is one area where Willis feels especially confident. Still, he is committed to developing the parts of his game that can help Barnsdall in every situation.
“I think one of the biggest strengths of my game is pass blocking. I’m working on improving leadership and communication and becoming a more complete player,” Willis said.
The senior values the close-knit culture shared by his teammates, saying the group’s daily effort creates an environment that encourages improvement.
“What I love most about my team and teammates at Barnsdall is how close we are. Everyone has each other’s back, and we push each other to get better every day,” Willis said.
Willis draws inspiration from his family and has also learned a lasting lesson from teammate Brohk Townley: show up for the group, even on difficult days. He plans to carry that mentality into the season.
“One lesson I learned last year is that you have to stay focused and keep working, even when things don’t go the way you want. That’s something I’m carrying into this season,” Willis said.
Away from football, Willis plays baseball and participates in FFA. Following graduation, he hopes to pursue degrees in agribusiness and finance before building a career selling tractors and land.
