Today’s student-athlete lives and breathes the sport they play. Always working to get better. Some grow up playing a sport for most of their lives as they enter and progress through high school. That can be said for Copan High School’s Weston O’Rourke.

O’Rourke started playing football at a very young age and is now representing the Hornets on the gridiron.

“I started playing football in first grade and I knew it was the sport for me when my freshman season ended,” said O’Rourke.

A two-way starter, O’Rourke starts at running back and defensive back. Last season he rushed for 1,279 yards and scored 18 total touchdowns. On defense, O’Rourke made 111 tackles.

“What I like about being RB is seeing my coaches and my teammates hyped up when I make a good play,” said O’Rourke.

This spring and summer O’Rourke said he’s been impressed with the team and their progress entering the new season.

“Some positives I saw was our line looking better and stronger than last year and we looked like we knew our jobs better and were executing them better,” said O’Rourke. “What I love most about my teammates is how they all help each other up in tough situations and they’re always by each other’s and my side.”

As a student-athlete O’Rourke said Copan HS is the best place for him as a student and an athlete.

“I think it’s a good place because the teachers and coaches are all on you about your grades and the coaches are always making sure as many of us are at everything as possible.”

O’Rourke said the ultimate goal this season is to win a state title. Only a junior, O’Rourke would like to continue playing football at the next level, but if that doesn’t work out, he plans to become a lineman.
