It is always a special memory when you’re part of a team that goes as far as it
can, or place in a certain competition.
Hominy junior Maelyn Dixon has her moments as a member of both the Bucks’
fast-pitch softball and track teams.
“Making it to the Class A State Fast-Pitch semi-finals this last year was an accomplishment,” Dixon said. “So was qualifying for the State Track meet six times and placing third in the 400-meter relay.”
Dixon, who also plays slow-pitch softball and basketball, was part of a Bucks’ squad that finished 32-4 in the 2025 fast-pitch campaign.
“Playing my sports has taught me how to stay positive through the challenges I have faced and has created lifelong memories with teammates,” Dixon said.
Keagan Walker is the teammate who has impressed Dixon a great deal. “She is a hard worker, disciplined, and leads by example,” she said.
With their success, it’s hard not to be a fan of the hottest college softball team in the state, and Dixon is among the young women in the Sooner state who is a fan of “Oklahoma “Boomer Sooner.”
Her favorite player is Jayda Coleman, who was a force during the Sooners’ four-year national championship run from 2021-24.
“She is one of the best centerfielders who plays the same position as me,” Dixon said.
Dixon is inspired mostly by her parents and her coaches, Hunter Sumner, Ida Doyle, and Brian Miller. “They inspired me by creating goals, having belief in my capabilities, and motivating me to be successful,” the Buck junior said.
The best advice that anyone has given Dixon, she said, is “Don’t compare your progress to someone else’s.”
Dixon’s favorite part about representing her high school as an athlete is, “Seeing all the support from the community and having Buck Pride,” she said.
Outside of sports, traveling, sketching, hanging with friends, and shopping are some of Dixon’s favorite hobbies.
She is also involved with the Native American Student Association and the Family Career Community Leaders of America.
“Thank you to my parents, my high school coaches, travel ball coaches, and all my past and present teammates,” Dixon said.
