As a freshman, Alayah Downing is already embracing a key role for the Nowata High School varsity fastpitch softball team. Playing shortstop and center field, Downing brings versatility, energy and a team-first mindset to the Lady Ironmen.
Downing said the atmosphere around the program is one of the reasons she enjoys being part of the team.
“We always have energy and when one person is down the team is there to pick them up,” Downing said.
Nowata’s coaching staff also helps create an environment where players can compete while enjoying the game. For Downing, the combination of work and fun makes every day with the team meaningful.
“Coach allows us to keep it fun and there is never a dull moment,” she said.
Entering the season, Downing is focused on helping establish a standard that can carry the program forward. She hopes the team can build momentum while giving its seniors an opportunity to make a deep postseason push.
“Having a chance to create a winning culture and hopefully helping the seniors make a run at state,” Downing said.
Downing draws inspiration from her older sister, Kaleena, a former Division I softball player at Florida International University. Her sister’s example has shown her what it takes to compete at a high level and remain committed to improvement.
“My sister, Kaleena, because she was a Division 1 softball player at Florida International University and she’s shown me how to work hard and compete at a high level. She’s always there for me, encouraging me, and supporting me,” Downing said.
At the plate, Downing considers herself a triple threat and continues working to expand her game. She carries a simple lesson from last season into every opportunity.
“Keep swinging, keep playing fast and keep my head up even in the bad times,” she said.
Beyond softball, Downing also plays basketball and participates in powerlifting. After high school, she hopes to play Division I softball while pursuing a degree in sports psychology.
