9 Questions with Pryor’s Maggie Martin – Basketball Spotlight – Presented by Rhett Minson, State Farm

Pryor’s Maggie Martin

VYPE: What has basketball taught you that you use in your daily life?

Maggie Martin: You shouldn’t let failures and disappointments dictate how you feel or act.

VYPE: What position do you play and what do you like most about it?

MM: Power forward. That I get to play inside and outside the lane.

VYPE: What makes you passionate about basketball?

MM: I love the competitiveness and playing with my teammates even when it gets tough.

VYPE: What is the biggest challenge you have faced?

MM: Getting diagnosed with epilepsy at ten. I’ve been taken out of playing the sport I love because of my seizures. I’ve changed doctors and medications and had surgery on the back of my head to see if I will get even a little bit of relief and still doctors can’t figure out what is going on.

VYPE: What have you gained from this challenge?

MM: Be thankful for everything you have, tell your family you love them, do not hold grudges and be nice. In the end, it is not worth it, and you never know when it is going to end.

VYPE: What is the best advice that anyone has given you?

MM: My mom always says the habit of persistence is the habit of victory. I carry that with me because you shouldn’t just give up right away, you need to keep pushing for your goal.

VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher and why?

MM: Athletic director Coach Osborn. He gave me a Post-it note with the verse Psalm 55:22. “Cast your burden on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken.” That note is taped on my locker and is a good reminder that we should trust God and give everything to him instead of trying to carry it on ourselves.

VYPE: Who inspires you and why?

MM: My parents lead our family in a Godly way. They demonstrate unconditional love, patience, and resilience, even in the face of challenges. Their commitment to faith and family has been a constant example of what it means to live with integrity and purpose.

VYPE: What is your favorite basketball memory?

MM: Right before the coaches come in, we take about five minutes to sing praise by Elevation Worship. The energy we get from that is amazing and having this group of girls makes it fun.
