Locust Grove High School sophomore William Rubio embraces the demanding work that comes with helping the Pirates on both sides of the football.
A right tackle and nose guard, Rubio takes pride in being a dependable presence in the trenches. Whether he is protecting the quarterback, battling for position on the defensive front or doing the less-visible jobs that help an offense and defense operate, Rubio values the opportunity to contribute wherever needed.
“I play right tackle and nose guard for Locust Grove. I enjoy being able to play both sides of the ball and do whatever my team needs me to do. I especially enjoy competing against the other team, making plays, and knowing that my job helps the team succeed.”
Rubio said the connection among teammates is one of the most meaningful parts of his experience with the Pirates. He sees competition and support as equally important to the group’s success.
“What I love most about my team is how we always have each other’s backs and compete together. My teammates push me to get better every day, both on and off the field the field. We have a great bond, and I know I can count on them to when things get touch.”
Pass blocking stands out as one of Rubio’s strengths. He is comfortable protecting the quarterback and relying on patience and technique in those situations. Still, the sophomore recognizes the importance of continuing to build his game.
“One of the biggest strengths of my game is pass blocking because I’m comfortable protecting the quarterback and staying patient with my technique. I’m working on improving my run blocking by becoming more physical and keep getting stronger so I can be a better all-around linemen.”
That pursuit of improvement extends beyond football. Rubio also competes in track and field, primarily in the shot put, where he develops qualities that carry back onto the gridiron.
“I also compete in track and field, mainly in shot put. track helps me improve my explosiveness, strength, and overall athleticism, which also helps me in football. I enjoy competing in both sports because they challenge me in different ways.”
Rubio credits his parents for motivating him and names Ryan Summers as an example of consistent effort and teamwork. Looking ahead, he hopes to continue developing and earn an opportunity to play college football.
