Mayes County Mom of the Month – Salina’s Sherry Wilkins

By Elizabeth Contreras

Annalea has loved cheerleading since elementary school, cheering for her beloved Salina Wildcats all the way from youth football to high school. Her passion for the sport quickly became a family affair, and her mom, Sherry Wilkins, has eagerly joined her journey every step of the way.

“I love being a cheer mom,” Wilkins says. “Not only do I get to support my daughter, but I also get to help the entire squad and Coach Mackenzie Greene in any way I can. Watching these young ladies grow, learn, and overcome challenges has been incredible. They are all amazing, and it’s such a joy to be part of their journey.”

Wilkins’ involvement with the squad is made easy thanks to the support of the Salina High School Cheer Booster Club. Backed by parents, the school, and the wider community, the booster club ensures the cheerleaders have everything they need, from camps and uniforms to warm-ups and other essentials. As president of the Cheer Booster, Wilkins works tirelessly to make sure the squad is well-supported.

“I always try to make sure every fundraiser pays for itself, that it’s fun, and that we reach our goals. Everything we do is for the cheerleaders,” she adds.

Fundraising is a central role for Wilkins, and she is always looking for new ways to support the squad. Her husband is there every step of the way, taking on the role of Cheer Dad, and their family often helps with events, making the experience even more meaningful.

“The Cheer Booster Club provides so much, and our board members are incredible. I couldn’t do it without them,” she says.

Some of Wilkins’ favorite memories include watching the squad execute perfectly on cue during performances.

“They work so hard, waking up early and giving their best at every game,” she says. “It makes everyone proud to see them shine.” Beyond fundraisers and concession stands, Wilkins enjoys encouraging the cheerleaders and telling them how proud she is. “Especially with those Friday night lights, they have a special sparkle.”

Wilkins treasures the friendships she’s formed within the cheer community. Tailgating with family, selling pom-poms and t-shirts at the Spirit Shack, and watching the cheerleaders give their all in front of a supportive community are moments that make the hard work worth it.

“Everyone is willing to help, and you really become part of a supportive community,” she says.

Her advice to other parents is to just get involved.

“Support your cheerleader and her squad. You won’t regret it,” she explains.

For Sherry Wilkins, being part of a team, a community and a journey that shapes young lives through service is what she values most. Through every fundraiser, game and performance, she has witnessed the spirit of the Salina Wildcat cheerleaders, and she continues to pour her time and energy into supporting them every single day and celebrating every moment they shine.
