Q&A with Inola’s Jeff Unrau – Presented by Courtside Benefits Group, LLC

Jeff Unrau

On July 1st, 2023, Jeff Unrau accepted the position of Inola Public Schools Superintendent. For over 45 years, Unrau has worked in education in some form. We caught up with Mr. Unrau to discuss his career and the future of Inola Public Schools.

VYPE: Prior to taking the Superintendent job, what were you doing?

Jeff Unrau: I have been associated with Inola Public Schools in some fashion for over 45 years. I attended Inola from kindergarten until graduation in 1994. In 1998, I returned as a math teacher and coach before getting into administration as assistant principal before I was middle school principal and athletic director for 14 years. Most recently, I was the assistant superintendent and athletic director for two years.

VYPE: What do you enjoy most about working as the Superintendent of Inola PS?

JU: The best part of being superintendent is the opportunity to make a meaningful, lasting impact on the lives of students, staff, and families throughout the district. Every decision we make — whether it involves curriculum, facilities, or community partnerships — ultimately centers on creating the best possible conditions for students to learn and thrive. It is deeply rewarding to see that impact in action — to watch a student discover their strengths, a teacher feel supported and empowered, or a school community come together around a shared vision. I find great fulfillment in leading with purpose — setting a strategic direction for the district, ensuring equity and excellence in every classroom, and fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.

VYPE: Did you have a mentor or someone you could lean on for advice during your career?

JU: I have been so incredibly blessed to have so many wonderful people who have poured into my life on a personal and professional level. My family is amazing, they are so supportive and serve as a sounding block and offer great perspective. Professionally, the list is too long to include. I am so thankful for the numerous people that I can lean on for wisdom and guidance. From my past teachers to current colleagues, I have so many that are just a phone call away. Being a superintendent is very similar to other jobs in education, you learn from others, glean from their experiences and put it together to make the best version of yourself.

VYPE: Most rewarding part of the job is…

JU: Ultimately, being a superintendent is about service and stewardship. It’s about ensuring that every child, regardless of background or circumstance, has access to an excellent education and the opportunity to succeed.

VYPE: What is your message to the students at IHS?

JU: Every day you come to school, you take another step toward building your future, and that’s something to be proud of. Education is more than lessons and grades. It’s about discovering what you care about, learning how to work with others, and developing the skills to make a difference in the world. Each student has unique talents and dreams, and our job as educators is to help you discover them. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, to make mistakes, or to try something new — that’s how growth happens. Always treat others with kindness, stay curious, and believe in yourself. You have people all around you — teachers, principals, and staff — who believe in you and are here to help you succeed. The future truly is in your hands.

VYPE: What does the future of education look like for Inola Public Schools?

JU: The future of education is filled with opportunity. Learning today is no longer limited to textbooks or classrooms — it’s about developing the skills, creativity, and character needed to succeed in a rapidly changing world. The focus is on helping learners think critically, collaborate effectively, and pursue their passions with purpose. Technology and innovation will continue to shape how you learn, but the most important part of the future will always be the students — their curiosity, their effort, and their commitment to growth. Education is the foundation for whatever comes next. We want to prepare students not only for college or careers, but for leadership, service, and lifelong learning.
