Grove High School

Grove High School football player Deringer Hollenbeck is playing linebacker for the Ridgerunners and is one of the standout players on a solid defense. Hollenbeck started playing football in elementary school.

“I started playing football in second grade. I knew it was something that I wanted to continue doing right away. When I was a young rambunctious kid, I just loved running around and hitting people but now I loved that you can always improve on every aspect of how you play,” said Hollenbeck.

Hollenbeck said he loves competing with his teammates and being on the field. His goal is to help his team win and play in the All-State game.

“I hope to become an All-State linebacker, total at least 100 tackles this year, and most of all have fun,” said Hollenbeck.

In the classroom, Hollenbeck said he enjoys his math and science subjects. But the secret to Grove’s success on the field, could be their proximity to the lake.

“I think we have the ability to practice harder than other schools on hot days because we always have a nice cool breeze coming off the lake,” said Hollenbeck.

As for his teammates, Hollenbeck said everyone is focused and ready to take on all challengers while having fun doing it.

“I wouldn’t say anyone is super serious on the team. Most of us realize that football is just a game and that we should have fun. A younger guy on the team that always makes us laugh is Trip May and an older guy that definitely makes us laugh is Gavin Wyatt.”

Away from school, Hollenbeck said he enjoys playing pickle ball and attending church. After high school he hopes to wrestle in college and become an electrical engineer. Hollenbeck said the best advice he’s been given is to take advantage of every opportunity because you don’t know when you will get another one.
