Ketchum’s Keira Bethel

By Elizabeth Contreras

Holding the position of shortstop for the Warriors, sophomore Keira Bethel says she has been passionate about softball since she was just six years old.

“What I love most about softball is that it’s a team sport,” she says. “I also really value the bonds I’ve made.”

That sense of togetherness carries into everything that the coaches and athletes at Ketchum High School do, and for Bethel, that’s best part.

“We have a very close-knit school and team,” she says. “We always have each other’s backs, and there’s no drama.”

Under the guidance of coach Savannah Brown, Bethel has developed her skills and confidence on the field.

“I know we can beat anyone we face,” she explains. “We just have to have confidence.”

She says that part of her preparation for each game is focusing on that mindset and trusting in her team.

“I mentally prepare for a game by knowing that we just have to have confidence,” Bethel adds.

Playing softball has also taught her the power of being proud of others and the importance of celebrating another’s success.

“Being part of a team has shaped me by being proud of other people’s accomplishments,” she adds. “Just being happy for everyone because you, too, will have your moment.”

Learning to sit with others regardless of your own circumstance is something Bethel says is pivotal in being a good teammate, which is far more important than anything else.

“Being a good teammate is the best way you can contribute to your team,” she notes.

Last season wasn’t without its challenges. Bethel admits she struggled with being scared of the ball, but she overcame it through hard work and with support from those around her. “People believing in me and a lot of repetition helped me get past it,” says Bethel.

After graduation, Bethel has high ambitions and plans to attend college where she will continue as a multi-sport athlete.

“I would like to play multiple sports in college, like softball and basketball,” adds Bethel.

With her hard work and pure love for the game, Keira Bethel has become a cornerstone of the Warriors’ team. From overcoming challenges to building strong bonds with her teammates and coaches, she has shown that success comes from confidence and unquestioningly supporting those around you.
