Q&A with Fairland’s Melanie Crafton

VYPE: What grade are you in this year and how long have you played softball at Fairland?
Melanie Crafton: I’m a junior, and I’ve been playing softball at Fairland for six years now.

VYPE: What makes being a student-athlete at Fairland special to you?
MC: The best part is being on such a great team with supportive teammates and coaches.

We really are like a family, and I’ve built strong relationships with everyone.

VYPE: Who has been the biggest influence in your life and why?
MC: Definitely my dad. He’s been my coach since I was little, and he’s always been one of my biggest supporters. He grew up playing baseball, so he’s constantly pushed me to give my best.

VYPE: Who usually ends up with the dirtiest uniform after games?
MC: I’d say Calli for sure—she’s never afraid to get down and dirty.

VYPE: Where’s your favorite place to play and why?
MC: Honestly, at home. There’s just nothing like playing in front of our fans.

VYPE: What’s your thought process when you step up to the plate?
MC: I try to stay positive, focus on using my legs, and make sure I wait on the ball.

VYPE: What position do you play and is there another position you’d like to try?
MC: I play first base, and I really like it. I wouldn’t want to play anywhere else.

VYPE: Which teammate has impressed you this season?
MC: Honestly, all of them. Everyone has made so much progress and worked hard to get where they are today.

VYPE: What are your plans after graduation?
MC: I plan to go to college and pursue something in Culinary Arts.
