Sequoyah Claremore’s Lanie Thompson
Basketball season may be over, but players like Lanie Thompson spend all year putting up shots and getting better.
This season the Lady Eagles made it to the Area Tournament before losing to Verdigris, 46-48, but as a team, the Lady Eagles continued to improve and show they belonged in post-season play. For Thompson, the year marked her second season of varsity play.
“I am in 10th grade, and I am a shooting guard,” said Thompson.
Her passion for the game, her teammates and her school is obvious when you talk basketball with the sophomore.
“What I love about being a student-athlete is the coaches are great and the players are fun to be around,” Thompson said. “The environment is really fun, and I just love the game in general.”
Thompson said her teammates mean a lot to her and several have left an impression on her.
“Ava Springer is a teammate who has left an impression on me because she has been through so much and continues to fight,” said Thompson.
In the classroom, Thompson is focused on her grades and schoolwork.
“My favorite subject in school is math and my favorite teacher is Coach Fick,” said Thompson. “After I graduate, I would like to go to college for nursing school.”
Thompson said another favorite she has is playing basketball on the road. Thompson said she likes playing at Regent Prep.
“I really like their goals and I like playing at Salina High School.”
There is a lot to learn about Thompson and she has two seasons left as a prep player. Thompson said she has played the game since the first grade and the best player of all-time is Lebron James. When she has free time, Thompson said she likes to hang out with friends and family.
