Verdigris’ Tate Roller

By Bryce McKinnis

Verdigris’ Tate Roller has a mean streak to his game.

“I would say some traits that describe me as a football player would be that I love to be physical and aggressive,” the junior linebacker and tight end said.

His football journey began at six years old, when his father motivated him to play in the first grade. Also a standout wrestler for the Cardinals, his physicality was budding. As the years progressed, he found not only an aggressive approach on the field but an aggressive approach in preparation. In his eyes, if he’s not attacking the weight room and film room with the same urgency, then he won’t be able to attack ball-carriers on Friday nights.

“One thing people should know about me is that I’m always striving to be my best on and off the field,” Roller said.

At the same time his football career progressed, his teammates did along with his, and he formed an irrevocable bond with them. At a school like Verdigris, it’s not uncommon to play with many of the same players from your first snap to your last, and Roller has taken full advantage of the chemistry that comes with small-town football. In short — Roller’s a Verdigris Cardinal if there ever was one.

“My teammates continue to motivate me to play football. It’s easy to go in every day and play next to your brothers, and I also just love the game. I’ve grown up playing football my whole life,” Roller said. “It’s an honor to play for this school, this team and these coaches.”

But, as happens with most who take on the challenge of football, Roller has suffered health setbacks in his career.

“I just messed up my knee at the start of the season,” Roller said, “so, I’m trying my hardest to get on the field as soon as possible.”

As he has willed himself to success for the past decade of his life, expect Roller to dedicate himself to that goal: getting on the field as soon as possible. Thereafter, it won’t take long for him to turn back to his highest pursuit.

“My goals in football and in life are to become a great man and be a great leader on and off the field,” Roller said.
