OUTLOOK
It’s an exciting time for Vinita basketball as head coach Nathan Wylie has an experienced team returning and several players who know how to put the biscuit in the basket.
“We return four starters this season. A lot of experience coming back with some youth,” said Wylie.
Four-year starter Emma Pigeon (5-7, Sr.) is looking to close out her prep career with her best season to date. Pigeon is a guard that can get to the rim and shoot the three-ball, all while being a savvy defender. Sara Hency (5-11, Jr.) is the forward every coach wants on their team. Hency, a three-year starter, is a strong post player with good touch and an outside shot. Both Pigeon and Hency made the VYPE Top 100 list.
Haiden Smoke (5-10, Sr.) is a rebounding machine at forward. Smoke can defend guards and post players. Offensively Smoke has improved and could be a factor around the rim. Addison Osburn (5-3, Sr.) is Miss Consistency for the Hornets. Her play is crucial to the success of the team as she provides all the little necessities to make the machine work.
“ ”Two freshmen are looking to make an impact this season in Ayla Hency (5-10) and Rylee Brown (5-6). Hency is a threat to shoot the three and play inside, while Brown brings toughness to the court coupled with her tremendous athleticism.
Other players to watch include Calleigh Williams (5-8, Sr.) at forward, Ella Tyrell (5-6, Jr.) at guard, Jaycee Hensley (5-7, So.) at guard, Lauren Fraley (5-7, Sr.) at guard, Jolee Doggett (5-8, Fr.) at guard/forward, and Jenna Bandy (5-7, Fr.) at forward.
One player known for her work ethic and commitment to the team is Dakota Smith (5-6, Jr.) at guard. Known for doing whatever it takes to help her team win, Smith is expected to have her best season in 2024-25.
