Vinita’s Ayla Hency – Basketball Spotlight – Presented by Patrick Kauffman, Shelter Insurance

Vinita’s Ayla Hency

New to the varsity team this season, Ayla Hency has followed in her sister’s footsteps as a shooter and someone who can play multiple positions. Coach Nathan Wylie said of Hency, “Ayla can really shoot the three and can play inside as well.”

In her first season, Hency is playing small forward, but can play guard as well. She started playing basketball at a very young age.

“I started playing little league basketball as a first grader playing up on a 2nd and 3rd grade team,” said Hency.

Hency looks to her teammates for inspiration and has been impressed with the development of the team.

“I’m impressed with my team as a whole in how they have grown and improved as a team this season and how they are still improving,” Hency said. “Lauren Fraley keeps everyone on the team laughing. Jolee Doggett is the most serious. I love that my teammates are unselfish and work together as a team.”

As a freshman, it can be tough to figure out your role, but Hency said she has focused on her strengths.

“The strength of my game is probably my shooting. I have most improved on my defense this season,” Hency said. “My favorite moment as a player for Vinita is winning the Big Dawg Shootout and making All-Tournament team.”

Before a game, Hency mentally prepares herself by playing some music in the locker room.

“I listen to my game day playlist to settle my nerves and get focused for the game,” said Hency.

Also a cross country and track athlete, Hency believes VHS is a great place to be a student-athlete. “Vinita has a well-rounded curriculum and good people which make it great for student-athletes like me.”
