Vinita wrestling continues to put tough wrestlers on the mat who love to compete. John Dually Bandy is one of those wrestlers. Like many of his peers, Bandy started wrestling at a young age.

“I started wrestling when I was six and wrestled until I was eight, I then started wrestling again when I was 12. I’m now a senior this year,” said Bandy.

Wrestling at 126-pounds this year, Bandy said he has always enjoyed having great workout partners in the wrestling room.

“I have always been surrounded by outstanding athletes in the room. I love being able to watch them and that they are open to helping people in the room. They are never afraid to make a sacrifice for the team. I love the camaraderie among teammates,” said Bandy.

The tournament schedule is a tough one this season, but Bandy said he’s always had a couple of favorites on his personal list.

“I have two favorite tournaments. The first being the Catoosa tournament. Wrestlers come from all around to wrestle and it’s nice to see new competition. My second tournament is the Perry tournament. I believe it is one of the hardest tournaments in Oklahoma, while I never do very good there it is one of the best tournaments I have ever wrestled in,” said Bandy.

The senior is the current FFA president at VHS and played football until this season. In the classroom, Bandy said his favorite subject in school is history.

“I love learning about other people’s lives and what they did to fail and succeed, it’s like learning how to better yourself and life without having to learn from your mistakes. My favorite teacher is Mr. Chris Neal. Any time I need advice about what I should do, whether it is school or life, he is always open to helping me.”

Bandy plans on attending college next year for political science and law. Away from school you can usually find him spending time with family and friends while working on his family’s ranch.
