Dewey Cheer

This year has been kind to Dewey High School’s varsity cheer team.

“Since tryouts, the athletes have taken immense pride in their process by consistently showing up with determination and a positive attitude,” DHS head coach Alex Kuhns said. “They’ve embraced every challenge, using each practice to improve and push their limits.”

A sense of camaraderie has sprouted in the months since this team first came together, thanks in part to the leadership of captains Keilan Ruble and Jaidin Henderson.

“These two add so much value to the team. They help with a lot of the behind-the-scenes stuff like making sure we have poms and props for game days,” Kuhns said. “They are also great at contributing ideas that make our team stronger.”

Younger athletes like Piper Steitler and Izzy Perry have made a tremendous impact in a short time.

“Piper has demonstrated incredible growth in her skills, consistently pushing herself to new heights and becoming a reliable and dynamic member of the team,” Kuhns said. “Similarly, Izzy Perry has made remarkable progress, honing her techniques and stepping up as a leader among her peers. . . Both Piper and Izzy have bright futures ahead.”

Above all else, Kuhns is proud of her team’s “unwavering commitment and resilience.”

“Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, they never lost sight of their goals and continued to support one another through thick and thin,” Kuhns said. “Their ability to stay focused and motivated, even during tough times, has been truly remarkable. . Watching them develop from eager hopefuls to confident and skilled athletes has been truly inspiring.”

This squad, Kuhns said, has cemented a legacy of “perseverance, unity and excellence.”

“They’ve set a high standard for dedication and teamwork, showing future squads what it means to truly commit to the sport and to each other.”
