Having a young team and playing in a tough conference will not make things easy for Welch and head coach Shawn Goodwin this season. Despite the reasons the season will be a challenge, there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic.
“We return two starters, both seniors,” Goodwin said. “We will be young; we play in a tough conference so night in and night out we have to be prepared to compete. Looking to get back on track with advancement in the playoffs.”
Leading the way are seniors Camy Etzel (5-6) and Nicole Feltynowski (5-7). Etzel averaged 10 points a game last year while Feltynowski averaged just over 4.0 points. Both will play a guard spot giving Welch two experienced players in the backcourt. Etzel has started since her freshman season and brings excellent speed and court awareness to the floor.
“ ”Addison Keith (5-6, Jr.) has put in the work to become a player coach Goodwin can count on. Keith brings a positive attitude to the floor and is the type of player every coach wants on their team. Whitley Goodwin (5-10, Fr.) is a match up problem for other guards in the conference. Goodwin has tremendous potential to be a solid shooter and disrupt opponents defensively.
Another player to watch is Anna Villa (5-6, Fr.) who will likely play a forward or post position. Coach Goodwin said he is excited to see Villa’s development coming into the season.
Several underclassmen are looking to step up and fill in where needed. Majen Wiegand (5-6, Fr.), Madelyn Dalrymple (5-4, Fr.), Vanessa Aguilar (5-6, Fr.), and Marayah Dollison (5-6, So.). This young group represents the future of the program and will see valuable playing time this year.
