Fairland’s Mia Ross
As the temperatures continue to climb, things are heating up on the softball field for Fairland High School and Mia Ross.
Now a junior with Lady Owls, Ross plays first base and outfield for head coaches Chad Ross and Jeni Kline. The Lady Owls are 9-2, ranked No. 6 in Class 3A heading into the month of April. Ross said she and her teammates are working hard this season to make it one to remember.
“I’ve worked hard to improve on my hitting over the years. I feel like my hitting has turned into one of my stronger points,” Ross said. “I love that most of us have played together since 8u and that we’ve all known each other for a long time, which I also believe has contributed to most of our success.”
Ross has played softball since the age of five and said she loves the support the school and the town show the team.
“The administration and teachers at FHS are very supportive and helpful. The students provide tons of support and encouragement throughout the season. Our parents are always there for us and are always willing to help with anything we need,” Ross said. “Support from them means a lot to me because it lets me know that they have my back. My Dad is also our head coach, so his support is extra special to me.”
Ross is a member of the Eastern Shawnee tribe, and she said their support means a lot to her as well. Ross is inspired by her family and someone who meant a great deal to her. “The person who inspires me most is my nana. My nana passed away a couple years ago from cancer. She always tried to be at my games no matter what to support me. She taught me to be a strong person and to keep my head up no matter what,” said Ross.
Once her high school days come to an end, Ross said she would like to attend college and work towards achieving other life goals.
