Vinita’s Jolee Doggett
By Elizabeth Contreras
Jolee Doggett is a sophomore at Vinita High School and has been playing softball since the 5th grade. She currently plays left field for the Hornets and says the most influential person in her journey has been her dad.
“My dad has always been a big influence on me,” Jolee says. “He’s helped me through every bit of softball I’ve played.”
The environment at Vinita is strong and supportive, and the team works collectively towards a successful season.
“We work as a unit and have all become close with one another,” Doggett explains.
Doggett enjoys the unpredictable nature of the sport, where each game brings new challenges and excitement.
“It’s not just the same things happening every game,” she says. “Something different happens every pitch.”
Before games, Doggett likes to adhere to a simple but comforting routine. This helps her center herself spiritually before competition, keeping her priorities straight and leaning on something bigger than the game.
“I will listen to music, and right before the game I like to pray by myself,” she shares.
Doggett has invested countless hours practicing and refining her skills.
“Recently, I had been in a slump in both defense and offense, and I was just getting in my own head,” says Doggett. “Working outside and getting good quality reps really instilled that confidence within me.”
That discipline and dedication to the sport are qualities she hopes others recognize in her as she strives for improvement each and every day.
“Being among all the great players makes me want to be a better person and athlete, not only for myself but for my team,” Doggett adds.
Doggett emphasizes keeping perspective on your mistakes and doing your best to live in the moment.
“If you mess up, it’s fine—it’s not the end of the world. Just go on to the next play, have the memory of a goldfish, and remember to have fun!”
She has set goals for herself, including reaching double-digit stolen bases and improving her hitting to get on base consistently. After high school, Doggett hopes to continue playing softball in college while working towards a degree in criminal justice or forensic science.
