Chouteau High School senior Kaynee Alberty said basketball is more than just a game. It’s about family, faith and the fierce determination to compete against any opponent, regardless of size.
As a power forward for the Lady Wildcats, Alberty faces a unique challenge every time she steps on the court.
“I think the toughest thing is going against the biggest player on the other team,” Alberty said. “I’m not incredibly tall myself, so I always try to play as physically as I can to make up for it.”
That physical style of play helped lead Chouteau to one of its most memorable victories this season — a win over Caney Valley in the Chelsea tournament.
“A lot of people didn’t think we would win that game, but we battled hard together and won,” Alberty said.
The senior’s competitive fire comes from an unwavering source of support: her father.
“My dad inspires me,” Alberty said. “Before every game he sends me a text telling me to play hard and play for Jesus, and he sends me a Bible verse. And no matter the outcome, he always tells me he is proud of me.”
Beyond basketball, Alberty serves as senior class vice president and is an active member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and National Honor Society. Her favorite subject is anatomy, and she enjoys sewing and DIY projects in her free time.
Alberty’s connection to Chouteau runs deep. She has attended school there her entire life, following in the footsteps of her mother and older sister.
“Representing Chouteau is special to me because I’ve gone to school here my whole life, along with my older sister and mom, plus many of my friends and peers,” Alberty said. “So to me it really is home, and even as I prepare to leave, a part of me will always be in Chouteau.”
As she prepares for life after high school, Alberty carries lessons learned from years of competition.
“Sports has taught me that it almost never goes how you think or wish it would have,” Alberty said. “That is part of life, and you just have to move on and let go and know that you did everything you could.”
